Tajweed for beginners: where to start
A calm roadmap for new learners — what to learn first in Tajweed, and what can safely wait.
Tajweed can feel enormous when you first open a rulebook. The trick is order: sound before rules, and rules in small, practised doses.
1. Master the letters and their exits
Makharij — where each letter is produced — is the foundation. Many later rules only make sense once the sounds themselves are correct.
2. Learn the rules that appear constantly
- Noon sakin and tanween (idhhar, idgham, iqlab, ikhfa)
- Meem sakin
- Madd, the lengthening of vowels
3. Apply the rule to real ayat immediately
A rule you cannot hear in a verse is only trivia. Good teaching ties every rule to ayat you actually read that week.
4. Record yourself
Listening back is humbling and enormously effective. Share recordings with your tutor for focused feedback.
